capacity of close to 7 GW by April 30th 2016. After this date, several other large projects have been commissioned. Therefore the 7 GW mark will have been exceeded by now.
India has been keen on expanding its solar industry and promoting photovoltaic installations. Just recently, the so far biggest single rooftop system worldwide has been inaugurated in the state of Punjab. With a capacity of 11.5 MW, the system spans nearly 17 hectares on a single rooftop of the Dera Baba Jaimal Singh campus of the philosophical organization Radha Soami Satsang Beas. On the other buildings another 8 MW of capacity are spread, bringing the total capacity of the spiritual organization’s campus up to 19.5 MW.
Now the MNRE has published a report (link is external) which detailed that the total amount of grid-connected solar power projects in India had reached a total commissioned capacity of 6998.853 MW by 30th April 2016. According to the ministry’s figures, the Indian states with the highest amount of installed PV capacity were Rajasthan, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. All three states have connected more than 1 GW of PV systems to the grid (Rajasthan 1,286 MW, Gujarat 1,119 MW and Tamil Nadu 1,062 MW).
