Actual subsidy is nearly $0.5B/year, based on best rate for equivalent big desal type user, from Mr Brumby, at 6.5 -1.5 = 5cent/kwh subsidy. Production is 550,000 tonne/yr x 15,000kwh/tonne x $0.05  = $412,500/year. As much again in carbon tax exemption, for which we also pay. Imagine saving $1B/year for proper renewable energy industry and attract people away from sprawling Melbourne to develop regional city like Portland?
